MORE ABOUT THE COFFEE
June brings us a coffee that is vibrant, refined and bursting with character. A perfect fit for this month's Coffee of the Month.
Our Coffee of the Month series gives us the opportunity to explore wonderfully diverse coffees from around the world while shining a light on the growers and communities behind each cup. For June's edition, we've chosen a washed coffee from Dipilto, Nicaragua, produced by third-generation coffee farmer Donald Efrain Roque at Finca San Ramon.
Nestled within the Dipilto mountain range near the Honduran border, Finca San Ramon sits inside a protected nature reserve known for its rich biodiversity, fertile soils and ideal coffee-growing conditions. The region's high elevations and cool climate help produce coffees with remarkable sweetness, clarity and complexity.
Donald comes from a family deeply rooted in coffee production. Following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather, he has spent his entire life working with coffee and developing a passion for the craft. In 2006, he entered Nicaragua's prestigious Cup of Excellence competition to better understand the potential of his coffee. Encouraged by strong results, he continued competing in 2009 and 2011, further refining his approach and commitment to quality.
NICARAGUA - DIPILTO
The town of Dipilto lies within the mountainous region of Nueva Segovia, one of Nicaragua's most respected coffee-producing areas. The combination of altitude, climate and generations of coffee-growing expertise creates ideal conditions for producing exceptional specialty coffee.
For Donald, the journey from conventional coffee farming to specialty coffee production involved more than improving quality. It meant educating and training his team to adopt new harvesting and processing methods, ensuring only the very best cherries made it into each lot.
Over the last five years, Donald has worked closely with our import partners, Caravela, and credits this relationship with transforming his perspective on coffee. Today, he is constantly striving to improve and firmly believes in the future of specialty coffee in Dipilto. His goal is not only to elevate his own coffee but to encourage other producers in the region to focus on quality and long-term sustainability.
The result is a beautifully expressive washed coffee that showcases the very best of both the producer and the region.
THE FLAVOUR PROFILE
Expect a sweet and elegant cup filled with:
Stone Fruits - Sugarcane - Rose Petals
Think ripe plums, juicy nectarines and sweet prunes from the very first sip. As the coffee cools, layers of sugarcane sweetness emerge, creating a silky, lingering sweetness that carries through to a delicate floral finish reminiscent of white rose petals.
It's a coffee that's vibrant yet balanced, complex yet approachable.
The abundance of juicy purple fruit notes inspired this month's name: Purple Rain. One sip in and you'll understand why.
