About this Product
CDNT (Caficultores Diferenciados del Norte del Tolima) is a collective of producers from Northern Tolima. It includes some of the oldest members of the LaREB group composed of growers from the municipalities of Casabianca, Falan, Palocabildo, and Villahermosa. Its objective is to contribute to rural development in Northern Tolima through a sustainable agricultural production model in organizational, social, and environmental terms, aligning with the objectives set by the UN for 2030.
90% of trees in the area are hybrid coffees which are productive, though they aren’t seen as high quality beans and unfortunately, these are not sought after outside of traditional markets. In order to change this narrative and improve quality, the first step was to change these cultivars, a process met with dismissal and reluctance from local authorities due to unrealistic expectations.
With the help, research and investment of Houston & Jacksonville Zoo, the process of change began by planting 10,000 saplings of high quality cultivars (with 15,000 that have already been planted across the region) in a state of the art centre known as Vivero Milagros, nestled on LaREB’s flagship farm El Bocadillo. The goal is to convert 100 Hectares to this new sustainable system over the next 3 years.
Improving quality and ecosystems is a long-term focus, giving producers a better control over their place and ownership in the supply chain.
Cherries for this lot are grown organically and carefully selected before de pulping. They are fermented to break down the mucilage then fully washed. Drying takes place in parabolic greenhouses for 10 to 18 days depending on the weather. The result is a clean and expressive cup that reflects the strength of the small holder communities in Planadas.
