Guatemala La Morena

In Guatemala’s traditional coffee sector, women provide up to 70% of the physical labor but historically operate only a fraction of the farms, facing steep barriers to land ownership, training, and financial independence. La Morena was launched to shatter this glass ceiling.

What started in 2015 as a micro-lot of just 22 farmers has blossomed into a thriving platform for over 1,600 female producers. Working alongside agronomists through the Volcafe Way program, these women have optimized their farm management, increased crop yields, and scaled their businesses to access the global specialty market at higher-than-market premium prices. Named after the deep, comforting sweetness of unrefined cane sugar (azúcar morena), this coffee proves that exceptional flavour and social change go hand in hand.
