The Region
Grown high in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico, Iyo Sii coffee represents the deep agricultural traditions of indigenous coffee-producing communities. Farms in this region are typically small family-owned plots cultivated beneath native shade trees, where coffee is grown alongside fruit trees and forest vegetation in biodiverse polyculture systems.
The cool mountain climate, mist-covered forests, and rich volcanic soils create ideal conditions for slow cherry maturation, helping develop sweetness, structure, and clarity in the cup. Coffee production here is still largely manual, with selective hand-picking and small-scale washed processing carried out directly on the farms.
Many producers in Oaxaca belong to indigenous groups such as the Mazatec, Mixtec, and Zapotec communities, where coffee cultivation has been passed down through generations. Traditional farming methods and shade-grown cultivation help preserve biodiversity while supporting local livelihoods.
