The Story of Finca La Merced & The Alburez-Ortega Family
Nestled among the forested volcanic slopes of Acatenango, Guatemala, Finca La Merced has been stewarded by the Alburez-Ortega family since 1832. While coffee was first introduced to the estate in 1912, the family’s agricultural heritage is rich and diverse—spanning generations of dairy farming, beekeeping, and planting fragrant orange groves across the land. Deeply committed to their people, the family also founded the area's first school, dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for local girls.
Today, multiple generations work together to cultivate legacy Bourbon trees beneath Acatenango’s rich shade canopy. Taking advantage of the region’s sun-drenched, arid harvest winds, this lot is processed as a full natural: whole cherries dry slowly on patios under close supervision, allowing the native fruit sugars to infuse the dense Bourbon seeds. The result bridges over a century of traditional estate craft with a decadent, fruit-forward cup profile.
