We believe every coffee roaster needs a good Brazilian coffee in their range. We’ve changed our Brazil offering a few times over the years. The Rio Brilhante is here to stay.
It’s an anaerobic pulped natural, which means the fruit of the coffee cherry have been left on the bean, and then left to ferment without oxygen. This gives the coffee an intensity and brightness which we absolutely love. Roasted long enough for all the sugars to caramelise, the notes we could taste are praline, cane sugar, green apple (the brightness), and syrup (a very heavy body).
We hope you enjoy this classic brew.

Located in the Pântano micro-region of Cerrado Mineiro, Minas Gerais, Fazenda Rio Brilhante is one of Brazil’s most established and innovative coffee farms. Founded by Inácio Urban in the 1980s, the farm grew from an initial 20 hectares planted as a learning venture into a world-class coffee operation spanning 2,665 hectares, with more than 1,650 hectares dedicated to coffee cultivation.
Situated at elevations ranging from 900 to 1,150 metres, Rio Brilhante benefits from the well-defined seasons, reliable rainfall, and favourable climate that have made Cerrado Mineiro one of Brazil’s premier coffee growing regions. The farm cultivates a diverse range of varieties, including Bourbon, Catucaí, Paraíso, Topázio and Arara, producing both natural and pulped natural coffees during the harvest season from June to September.
Today, the farm is managed by the second generation of the Urban family, with Erika Urban, Fernando Urban and Noé Urban continuing the vision established by Inácio. Producing an average of 85,000 bags annually, the farm is divided into 45 distinct coffee plots, each with its own terroir and microclimate. Large grevillea and mahogany trees separate these sections, creating natural windbreaks while helping to preserve biodiversity across the property.
Named after the “bright river” that runs through the property, Fazenda Rio Brilhante draws its name and vitality from the crystal-clear waters fed by the Guarani Aquifer, one of the world’s largest underground freshwater reserves. Beyond its coffee production, the farm supports a diverse agricultural operation that includes soy, corn, cotton, beans and cattle grazing. The continued involvement of the Urban family reflects a commitment to preserving the farm’s legacy while driving innovation for future generations.
Certified by Rainforest Alliance, Rio Brilhante combines scale with a strong commitment to sustainability. Native forest reserves and carefully preserved natural areas coexist alongside coffee production, while investments in responsible land management, employee development and modern agricultural practices ensure long-term environmental and social stewardship. The result is a consistent portfolio of traceable coffees that showcase the exceptional potential of the Cerrado Mineiro region and the Urban family’s decades-long dedication to coffee excellence.
