The Region
Monsoon Malabar is produced by various smallholder farmers in Chikmagalur, in Karnataka State, one of India's most historic and renowned coffee-growing regions. Situated in the foothills of Baba Budan within the biodiverse Western Ghats, the region benefits from an altitude of around 800 metres above sea level, abundant natural streams and a tropical climate ideal for coffee cultivation.
Coffee is traditionally shade-grown beneath multi-tiered forest canopies, helping preserve the region's exceptional biodiversity while protecting the coffee trees from excessive sunlight. Alongside coffee, many producers also cultivate pepper, cardamom and citrus fruits, creating diversified farming systems.
The coffee is produced by smallholder farms averaging 16–20 hectares, using a mix of locally adapted varieties including Chandragiri, Hemavathi, Selection 9 and Selection 795, selected for their cup quality, productivity and resistance to pests and diseases.
About Processing
Monsoon Malabar is processed using India's unique Monsooning method, a process developed to recreate the character historically acquired by coffee during long sea voyages from India to Europe.
After selective hand-picking, cherries are naturally sun-dried on patios for approximately 11 days, receiving around six hours of sun each day before being milled. The green coffee is then transported to open-sided warehouses in Mangalore, where it is exposed to the humid monsoon winds for two to three months.
Once opened, consume within 4-6 weeks for best results and before best before date. Unopened lasts for 6 months. Best kept in cool dry environment.
