From Kiambu County, just outside Nairobi, this fully washed lot was produced at Kakindu Estate, a 76-hectare farm that is one of six estates owned and operated by Sasini. The estate puts a strong emphasis on its workers and community, providing living quarters, early childhood education and above-minimum wages, and it has helped fund a new computer lab at the local primary school. Selected cherries are pulped and fermented in water tanks, then washed through grading channels that separate the densest beans. The parchment is then dried on raised African beds for 2-3 weeks, in the traditional Kenyan style.
Grown at elevations of 1,800 to 2,000 metres in red volcanic soil, the SL28 varietal thrives in Kiambu’s cool nights and high altitude, which allow the cherries to ripen slowly and develop their complexity. Expect a juicy, vibrant cup with sweet berry fruit and stone fruit, a hint of cola and a clean white sugar sweetness. It’s a bright, classic Kenyan coffee.
