A peaberry is a coffee bean with a story – or rather, a coffee bean with an accident of botany at its heart. Ordinarily, the coffee cherry contains two seeds (beans) that develop flat against each other. Occasionally, by some quirk of pollination or genetics, only one seed develops, growing into a round, dense, singular entity that draws to itself all the nourishment the cherry would have divided between two. These peaberries are carefully hand-sorted from the normal flat beans at origin, and what they offer in the cup is a concentration of flavour that devotees of the form pursue with something approaching devotion. Kenyan peaberries are, by the consensus of serious tasters, among the finest coffee beans in the world.
