Burundi coffee

89 Burundi coffees from 67 independent UK roasters, from £5.65.

Burundi is a small, landlocked East African origin that quietly makes exceptional coffee. Almost entirely smallholder-grown and processed at communal washing stations, its Bourbon-variety coffee is clean, sweet and vivid — red berry, blackcurrant, florals and a juicy, structured acidity closely related to neighbouring Rwanda and Kenya. Logistics and political instability have historically made it hard to export, so when a good Burundian lot appears on a UK roaster’s shelf it is worth grabbing. Brew it as filter to enjoy the clarity and fruit. For drinkers who already love bright African coffees and want to go off the beaten track, Burundi is one of the most rewarding lesser-known origins.
