A ban on lower-quality Robusta, small “micro-mill” farms and pioneering honey processing give consistently clean, sweet, well-balanced coffees: brown sugar, citrus, red apple and a bright but rounded acidity. The country popularised the honey and natural styles now common everywhere, so you will find the same farm offered washed, honey and natural — a great way to taste what processing actually does. Regions like Tarrazú sit at high altitude and show more clarity. Costa Rican coffee rarely disappoints and rarely shocks, which makes it an ideal crowd-pleasing single origin for filter or a sweet, clean espresso.
