Vietnam is the world’s second-largest coffee producer and the powerhouse of Robusta, so most UK drinkers have tasted it without knowing — in instant coffee and commodity espresso blends. Traditional Vietnamese coffee culture (cà phê sữa đá — strong, dark Robusta over sweet condensed milk) is having a moment, and a growing number of roasters offer speciality-grade Vietnamese Robusta and even high-altitude Arabica from Da Lat. Robusta done well is bold, punchy and intensely caffeinated, with dark chocolate and nutty depth that cuts through milk.
